A booster pack of Pokemon Cards

My introduction to Pokemon Cards was a booster pack from my friend Eunchan.

"Let's play." he had said.

"Okay."

We left my parents' apartment. I followed him thinking we would be playing outside. But instead of running to the playground or to get our bikes we walked slowly. Eunchan caressed this shiny plastic packaging in his hands.

"Do you have any Pokemon cards?"

"No."

"I got you these. You do now."

"Wow thanks!"

"Come on. Let's go see what you got."

We didn't even go inside his parents' apartment. Instead we sat on the stairwell. Eunchan tore the pack open and he went through each card one by one explaining the significance -- or insignificance -- of each.

"See this. This is a holographic card."

I didn't know what that was.

"It means it's better. It's a good card. you see how it's shiny?"

"Yes."

"Save this. And in the future try to get more shiny cards."

"Holographic."

"Right!"

He gave me the holographic Mewtwo. I held it not thinking it was special inherently. I thought of what Eunchan had said, of how special this was because it was shiny and 'rare'. I thought of his words and the card felt special in my hand.

Eunchan went on to describe the layout of the cards. What did Hit Points mean? What were these moves? Why did the moves have numbers next to them.

"Hey wait a minute! This Holgraphic card sucks! It just has 10 damage?"

"Let me see."

Eunchan held the card in front of his face.

"No it's 10x. See you can use this attack with Energy cards and you can do much more damage."

He didn't convince me though. For some reason I was more fixsated on another card I had that inflicted higher damage.

"Come on. Let's play a game."

Eunchan ran back up to his parents' apartment to grab his own set of Pokemon Cards. And then we sat on the stairwell playing 'a game' of Pokemon.

From a teacher's perspective, Pokemon cards were a scourge in 1999. They were causing such a disruption that the school banned them. As part of my job history, I will write about what I did when a student decided to pull out a holographic Pokemon card in my classroom.

One of the memories that sparked me to write this was of a lunch lady making the announcement that Pokemon cards were being banned. I remember her calling them 'pokeman' cards and everybody laughed at her. Then they were really pissed
