What Are Your Credentials?

I used to frown upon people that would drop names like it should shift how I think about them.
There was once a guy that told me that he went to Brown University and paused for a reaction. Unfortunately for him, I didn't know all the Ivy league schools at that time. And he had to tell me himself.

I used to wonder why people bother with these things. Doesn't it make them look desperate?

Well, fast forward to 2022, and somebody wants to be an influencer.
Suddenly, I am seeing how every single person starts off any interaction by stating their qualification. It is almost a given that you need to first let people know why they ought to listen to you before you tell them anything that needs their time.

I saw this pattern a lot. Even in amazon.com as I looked for books to read. There were many books that had Oprah's Book Club - IN THE TITLE!

Everyone is signaling out there. There is so much competition for attention that you have to come with your credentials and badges showing within the first few seconds.

I am currently taking a course from someone who has put as his credential - Harvard drop out!
Maybe that is pushing it too far. But hey - he got my attention. And I am taking his class.
