I arrived in Marseille yesterday evening after a long car-share ride from Burgundy to Montpellier, where i took a train about 1h, to here. I'm in the apartment of a friend of mine, he's gone on vacation for a week and he left me the keys. That's super lovely of him, he's my sports buddy here, we used to train together every week before I left.
Last ten days i was in a Vipassana meditation course. It's called course and not retreat because every student who enrolls and is accepted must follow a very strict schedule everyday. The objective of the course is to learn this particular technique of meditation and to purify the mind. This is not an easy endeavor, some people quit and it's a pity because the places are limited and only a fraction of the people who apply actually get accepted. If you want to find out more about it google : 10 day Vipassana meditation course (in your country) you'll get all the details.
The onboarding for every student is brief, I've filled up a form, signed it, handed out all my (tech) belongings, phone, tablet, laptop. And other little things that are not allowed; spiritual materials, intoxicants, books, notebook, pen, etc. The rules are very strict and must be respected. If you decide to give it a try and find the determination to spend 10 days of your life learning this beautiful technique of meditation read all the rules carefully and respect them. You'll get most benefits out of the course If you do.
But why meditate?
Mainly to cleanse and calm the mind. Deeper meditation brings self-knowledge. Our human minds are layered like an onion. The deepest layers - closer to the core, are subconscious. The surface ones are conscious and hold our apparent understanding of what we are. It's our apparent frame of reality. The in-between layers are semi-conscious. Behavioral patterns originate in the subconscious layers. Cravings, aversions, desires, fears, etc. All experiences one has lived leave a trace in this subconscious layers of the mind and constantly they condition behavior.
In the process of meditation, one gets to have some awareness of the workings of his own mind. Some of these stimulus-response patterns become clear. Some are harder to figure out but with perseverance in meditation it is possible. To go deeper one must have a proper technique and Vipassana is the best.
After an experience like this one can have his entire worldview shaken up to the ground. It can be so profound, maybe too much for some.
My first course was in nov2019. 2 days ago i completed my second one. i think that everything untrue in one's mind must be burned. It must be revealed. I am an explorer of the mind and i will always be.
Take care.

The outer layer is simply a rationale of it all. A story we tell ourselves rather than "The Truth"
