Parents are more influential than we give them credit for. Growing up they are the boomers and so why would we look up to them. But although we like to act like we are not like them, I see it time and time again. History might not repeat but it rhymes.
My parents were
quiet
folk. And thus didn't leave such an impression. Instead I got influenced by my friends'
parents
. Of course not directly from the parents themselves, but through their children.
Like in college for the first time I realized how true
Blink-182
was. The soundtrack to
life
. I'd listen to
Enema of the State
on repeat, walking around campus and on drives to and back home.
But years later I came home to my roommate passing out after drinking too much, with some Blink-182 playing on loud through his speakers. I turned it down and had this dark feeling. This was his parents' life and now his. Was it mine?
