Retreat

I just got back from my weekend retreat with 5 other ladies. It wouldn’t be far fetched to say that I didn’t really know the ladies outside of our monthly book review sessions.

They are all from Ethiopia, they are all ladies and around the age group… though I suspect that I may be the oldest there. They have not been part of the book club since the beginning and I was the last to join in October of 2021.

A part of me was a bit weary of how the weekend would turn out. But I kept my mind open to the new experience. We drove in 2 groups to a beach 2 hours away.

Overall, we all got along pretty well. I find that I learn a lot about myself in such settings. I also realize how much I have to work on certain things. Communication is a skill I have always chased. And I am still learning how to listen more and talk less. I don’t know if I am comfortable with group settings like these but it wasn’t as awkward as I expected

This is very relatable. I feel seen in many ways. Thank you for writing this, Keni.

Some ladies are really nice and it's a pleasure to be around. The cat ladies sometimes can be very annoying, the more cats they have the more annoying. You can look briefly at their hands, do they have scratches ? Yes, then it's a cat lady with more than 2 cats.

There are also virgin ladies, indeed I've known one once, it was the librarian in my school, oh my she was awkwardness incarnated.

So... All that to say that sometimes i hang out with my yoga ladies and then, after making some jokes ... Like just my normal jokes they got offended. Wtf.

Thanks Sheila and Nedzen for reading. It takes many trial and error to find people that you can click with. In the end, it is worth it.
