When reversing the car, he knew he had to go slow.

He knew he had to keep his eyes on the rear view and side mirrors the entire time.

He might have a moment to look elsewhere, but as soon as two moments passed, he would need to make sure that he figured out quick what was behind him. Otherwise the worst could happen.

There were kids who ran around this alley. They ran just fast enough that they could suddenly appear.

Worried, he would sometimes check the speedometer. Because he felt like he was going a bit too fast. Sometimes he would notice that he was looking at his speed a little too much. If he really cared for the safety of the people potentially caught behind him, he would keep his eyes off the speedometer and fixed straight on the mirrors.

Nobody gives a damn if you're going slow, if you still run someone over. Better to be going faster, but not maim or kill anyone.

The thoughts that were running through his head when driven to look at his speed however. Was maybe a neighbor might spot him. Going a little too fast. That's what really worried him. So he checked his speed.
