I wanted to write a few thoughts that I didn't share in today's Be Wellthy newsletter about my experience at 40 Years of Zen last week.
People throw around the words "life-changing" and "transformational" all the time. The hyperbole has inured us from the impact when an event or experience is truly life-changing and transformational.
I remember the days when I had a Macintosh Plus with a max of 8MB of RAM (not a typo!) To run a certain game, I had to restart and turn off all non-essential extensions so that I had the most RAM available and the game wouldn't crash.
Windows still has this problem sometimes where you have to force quit an application because it is unresponsive or is running in the background when you no longer need it. The same applies to the iPhone, where many people are in the habit of sliding up to close applications and free up memory.
In the same way, our minds have many extra programs running without our conscious awareness. In fact, many of our habits and choices we make are done without conscious effort. Some reactions are deeply rooted in our nervous system and kick in to protect us. It's an artifact of evolution that often no longer serves us.
The answer is to become more aware of our thinking and feelings. There are tools you can use to get into a brain state that facilitates fundamental changes. It's like a reboot of your operating system.
I was fortunate to have this experience last week, and my life will not be the same.
