The compassion of democratization

Before digital publishing tools like Pagemaker, Quark Express, and Adobe InDesign, you had to undergo an apprenticeship as a typesetter to learn how to adjust line leading, kerning, and tracking by hand. 

Before out-of-the-box artificial intelligence frameworks, the cost to streamline your business or any number of critical problems was a Ph. D. in mathematics. 

Before LinkedIn, YouTube, and the advent of self-publishing, content creators had to line up in a narrow funnel carefully guarded by gate keepers whose particular tastes would dictate how easily you could share your voice with the world. 

The best innovations that have led to tremendous thriving are the ones that democratize — that make it easy to do things that traditionally have a high barrier to entry. 

A desire to make things frictionless is a noble and compassionate endeavor. When you make things more accessible for the people you aim to serve, you empower them to freely reallocate the most precious asset of all: time. 



You're right. I shit on self-published fiction a lot, but inherently this is the way to go. If you have to wade through tons of shit for a chance at a precious gem, it's probably worth it. To think that humanity has certainly missed out on some brilliant minds simply because they had no platform or opportunity...
