Chess Mind Hack

I am aware when my mind is not at a 100%. I can usually tell if drinking caffeine is helping or not. There is some fog that gets cleared up almost instantly.

But lately, I have found a more concrete way of knowing how sharp my mind is. I play chess on the site called Chess.com at least 10 times a day. My streak there is remarkable. I used to play 10 minute games at first cause I had become rusty from not playing chess for many years. After a few days of catching up, 10 minutes became too long for me. So I moved to 3 minutes.

The way the site works, it pairs you with people with scores close to you. If you win, you get more points and if you lose, your point reduces. The extent of points you get is directly proportional to how close or how far your opponents score is. Whatever algorithm the site is using, it is very good. I find myself paired with someone close to my skills so each game is a good mind workout.

On days when my mind is sharp, I find myself making great moves in less time and winning a lot of people with higher scores. And the reverse on days I haven't slept well.

I have started to identify the good days, and use that to work on difficult or important tasks.
FYI: chess.com uses the "Elo" system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system) used in every chess competition.

another game worth checking out is Dual N-Back - there was a fascinating paper in Nature about it last year: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-82663-w

also, I've found cold showers to be super helpful. I feel like they're basically a cliché at this point, but I get the craze now.

- I didn't know. Maybe I should enter some competition and experience what that is like.
Thanks

 - never heard of Dual N-Back before. The paper is interesting and took me to a few youtube videos for a few hours. Worth looking into for sure.

I can not get into cold showers for whatever reason. Heard it when I first heard of Wim Holf but man its so hard.
