Krispy Kreme

There was a birthday in our household today, and rather than celebrate with cake, we celebrated with doughnuts. Not your typical cinnamon doughnut, we had serious gourmet doughnuts from Daniel's doughnuts. These doughnuts were delicious, and it sparked a conversation about the time Krispy Kreme doughnuts first arrived in Australia.

Before Krispy Kreme, the best doughnut you could get was a jam doughnut, and I would always burn my lip on the hot jam when I ate one. When it arrived in Australia fifteen years ago, the glazed icing on a Krispy Kreme doughnut was novel and new.

The first store was opened next to Sydney airport. At this time, I used to do a lot of work travel to and from Sydney, and my last task before dropping off the rental car was to drive through the Krispy Kreme store and picked up a few dozen glazed doughnuts. When I got on the plane, the overhead baggage was full of doughnuts, as many other people travelling back to Melbourne had the same idea.

The doughnuts would be shared with the family and work colleagues, and every time I went back up to Sydney, there was an expectation that I would bring more doughnuts back with me. It was as if their Christmases had all come at once.

Today, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are sold everywhere in Melbourne, including every 7-Eleven store. The novelty of the glossy finish on the doughnut has worn off a little. But, we are still happy to celebrate with a good doughnut, though it is rarely a Krispy Kreme.

In my view, Krispy Kreme donuts are overrated. The best version is getting it hot and fresh right off the conveyor belt. It's all downhill from there. I will also pass on a jam donut as anything fruit-based is an instant turn-off. In general, donuts have to be a very rare and special occasion for me nowadays.
