I found a random note : 'Overcome distractions with Purpose.' And thought; It goes in line with the saying. If you don't stand for anything you will fall for everything. A hundred years ago people were hungry for information. They yearned that hidden knowledge, that occult manuscript or sacred lore. Science took a huge leap, internet was invented, social media, big data, ML and AI. Wow. so much happen in the last hundred years. Damn, I remember the 90's or whatever was going on before the iPhone came out. The world was still very much analog. The trends used to propagate like large soliton waves that swept across all continents. Maybe I'm wrong but it seemed to be more originality coming out in the world back then. You see, there'd be an evolution from one trend to the next. At least this is how I remember it. More original stuff. Now the global wave of ideas, trends is rather thin. Today we live in a state where everything is possible and old ideas are cross-polinated and dissimulated as new. Despite the overwhelming amount of content that is produced, only a tiny fraction is original.
But what's the matter with us? Here's my guess:
1) Culture is driven to a considerable extent by financial gain. Artists optimise for short-form, maximum engagement sensational(ism).
2) Consumers get dumber. They can't glean the subtler emotions - most don't relate due to lack of real-life experience.
3) Social media use alienates people. Algorithms resurface dumb videos that set the norm, appealing to the lowest common denominator drastically lowers the taste and IQ of the larger group.
Now with AI generated art, texts, music we will see yet even more regurgitated content but of a lower quality. Hopefully this won't become the norm, and hopefully the most original art will still come from humans and not some AI.
