When he knows that he should be doing something and he is not doing it - when he procrastinates - his leg (always the right) starts to bounce up and down like there are free bouncy rides on offer. Most often this happens at work, but even more often he does this when he's worried about something that he is actively avoiding; it does not want to avoid him. It will not pass all on its own (moreover, he is well aware of his dilemma). It's an anxious, nervous energy, not the kind anyone enjoys being around. It's the energy of a caged cat, pacing back and forth. This kind of energy needs an outlet. The outlet is focus. Concentration. It makes the bouncing leg rest again and the anxious thoughts inside his head take a back seat, if only for a time, intimidated by the intense focus on a singular and important task.
Sometimes the leg begins to bounce before he is fully conscious of the problem. He might be watching a movie, listening to something, even reading, and, a simple phrase is enough to open the floodgates. Most recently he was watching a movie when it started. In the movie the young protagonist craves his parents' approval and respect all the while succeeding spectacularly at something that his parents do not approve of (Comedy). In the protagonists' eyes this indicates that not only is he not successful but that he is, in fact, a failure. Finally, in a futile and stupid gesture, and much to our own protagonists' chagrin, he jumps to his death into a beautiful green void on a lovely Hawaiian island.
His leg had started bouncing around the time the film's protagonist, Doug, convinced his friend to forget about Law School and write sketches with him instead. Just write and be funny and that's it. That's it. You'd think that there was a spring on that bouncing leg, it was so regular in its bounce you'd think it was powered by the Energizer Bunny himself. He kept it up (and back down), with a few lulls, for the duration of the movie, then he got up and went to his laptop and he started to write.
