The screen turned blue. Candace thought, what the fuck? wasn't the phone supposed to be off... maybe Elena thought she had turned it off... or her pockets had turned it on by pressing a button.

Elena looked at Candace. Neither looked comfortable.

What should we do both thought without saying. The phone rang four times before Candace decided. She impulsively threw out her hand and grabbed the phone. Elena wasn't going to do anything, she could tell that much.

She put the phone to her ear. Why didn't she put it on speaker so both of them could hear? Candace thought it was because Elena already knew what the breathing sounded like. Then again... Candace shouldn't assume that the caller was the same person.

With that thought at the last moment, she took the phone away from her face and looked at the screen.

"Hey. It's your mom."

"Oh."

"But I thought your phone was off."

The phone kept ringing as Candace awkwardly held the phone out to Elena over the table.

"It was."

Candace put the phone face down on the table.

"I don't know what happened."
