Routine in a routine-less place

While visiting my parents' I found myself not taking my usual morning walks. We take a daily walk here in the middle of the day. It's a big time investment. About 1.5-2 hours. So I guess for awhile I've held off on any walking of my own until my mom, dad, and I hit the trail together for this longer walk.

After 2+ weeks of being here I noticed that I was missing out on a lot by not taking shorter walks. Even just five steps outside to be surrounded by nature's blue light and breathe fresh air infuses a different spirit into me and influences for the better how the rest of my day goes. So after being routine-less for my first few weeks here I decided that it was time to deliberately uptake a morning routine.

I have one back in Bloomington, IN. But it's funny how such things fly out the window when you're in a different setting. Especially if you're at where you grew up. Because I grew up not crafting routines of my own, whenever I'm back at my parents' I notice myself just kind of waiting for things to be done for me. I don't take as much initiative.

But at the age of 29 (soon to be 30!) you can't expect parents to give you routines. If you don't give pick them yourself and stick to it then you'll just have none at all.

After a few days of starting my day with a walk outside, even if it's not on a nature trail, I feel immensely more grounded. When I see the neighbor's house from the front, and then from the side and back when I'm on the other side of the neighborhood I feel this exciting tinge of it's a new day.

I discovered this idea when I first started traveling for work. I realized that certain habits went out the window when I was traveling, and I had to deliberately build them into my routine. Ideally, I crafted the habits at home in a way that was easy to take them on the road rather than have one set of habits for home and one for the road.

James Clear was just talking about how because of covid he's been able to work out more like he would want. With weights in his home instead of bodyweight in hotel rooms.

He even stated that the mobile routines were good but never as good as the ones situated to a more stable location.

By the way you're going to fight hard to not have to travel for work once covid ends right? I remember you writing that alot. Staying tuned for how that fight goes.

Well, you can't beat home-court advantage. Yes, the game has changed when it comes to traveling for work. My goal is to keep it off the table.
