Her friendship with Ashley faded after the summer she met Alan. She wasn't sure why, and although they never talked about it Ashley didn't know either.

They moved away, and she had the cafe, even after the cafe she had the other job. Ashley did too. But even now she still would talk to her, or she could guess what she'd say. They send the occasional text, just to check if the other is alive, but nothing more than that.
Driving she felt free, the air was different, and it reminded her of a trip Ashley and her took when they were 17. They just drove to another town and stayed in a hotel. But they had alcohol, and talked about everything and laughed until 4am. She felt the same as then now driving, the same freedom they had blasting their own music in the car for the three hour drive.
She arrived at the McDonalds it looked like no one else had been there since she left. She went inside and ordered the same thing.
She looked around and it was empty. So she decided to wait. So she did until her ice cream got warm.
