It was Cold

as reply to time to go back to her life

"No one paid today."

"What?"

Blayne was smoking a cigarette outside when the new kid came and told him. Hungover from the two days before he took a long drag and tossed the but away.

Exhaling as he walked.

"What do you mean?"

" I uh I mean no one paid for room 48. The one with that guy and girl. The long stayers."

"Did they leave the key?"

The kid shook his head.

Blayne went behind the desk. Tapped the space bar a few times, and sure enough room 48 was in the red.

He checked the overnight slot, then their rack of spare keys. Only there did he find 48.

"Okay. Uh we just got to go there, and knock. Lots of time people just forget."

"But they never forget. Like its been like 50 days."

"Yeah, hmm." Blayne remembered one time a similar thing happened and they found the guy dead in his room. He hung himself.

"Yeah, well will just go check and remind them. Sometimes people just forget. "

He said this to the new kid, but also to himself. He could feel his palms well up with sweat. It was like this when he was nervous. He had the spare key in his hand, and he went up the stairs. The new kid right behind him.

"Just so you know, if they don't have the money, we do have to kick them out, but again we don't do that the security does. So we just ask them politely to leave and if they say no we just go back downstairs."

Fuck he was talking to much.

42, 44, 46, 48.

"Here we are." The silence behind the door made his heart jump.

He knocked once. Then twice. Then he really banged on it. So much so the guy across the hall came out.

"Sorry heard a noise."

Finally he used the key and turned the handle.

"Hello, hotel staff, just checking to see if everything is alright."

But it was weird the bed was made, the window was open, and everything was in order. Like two people were never there.

"We still have to turn this over. You can call housekeeping when we get back down."

There was just a cup of coffee on windowsill, Blayne touched it, it was cold.
