There was so much maintenance that had to go into keeping all this data alive. The products would only keep the data accessible to its users so long as it was profitable.

If he wrote something down onto paper, then that would stay like that save for rain or fire. Of course he could lose the piece of paper, but he was planning to write this story over and over again. He was going to keep writing it and leaving it around the world so that someone would find it and figure out the story eventually.
