I started to walk outside for a few minutes a day to begin my goal of working out regularly. Since I was told to take it easy, walking was the best thing to start with.
Initially even a few minutes was enough to make me exhausted. It was quite troubling to realize just how much I was out of shape. I went from someone that use to spend hours at the gym to getting tired after a few minutes of walking.
I continued to walk everyday though I hated it. I especially hated feeling tired without barely doing anything.
Then my dad came to the US. He is a walking addict. He walks a minimum of 20,000 steps daily. Doing just walking, he was able to lose over 40 pounds and get his health completely under control. Seeing how he transformed himself encouraged me to keep going. I started to join him for walks and talks once a day. He would slow down so that I can keep up with him and also maintain the ability to talk and enjoy the process.
Slowly, I started to feel better. I started to look forward to the walks. I even started to walk when the weather wasn't too good. For the last week or two, I have managed to maintain at least 5000 steps daily. That is a big progress from where I was. I am also happy with the consistency and the feeling of addiction I am developing towards walking. Getting to spend time outdoors and smelling fresh air has compounded advantages which I want to take advantage of for a long time.
