Construction

For the past few months whenever I've drove into my city, San Fernando, I've been taking the long way out. Not much has changed yet but a huge construction project is in its first stages and I've been driving by every time to see the progress.

Whenever something changes in your surroundings there's a moment when you realise you can't remember how it used to be. The new-look might have only been around for a year or two but it's now the only clear image in your memory.

Driving by helps me preserve that old image while seeing the transition in the real-time. There's something exciting about change even when it changes an area that already had a great view. How will it change the city? Will it be a place I visit regularly? Will it become my default memory? There are so many places that didn't exist a few years ago that you can't imagine not having them around anymore. With every new project, there's a chance for that to happen again.
It's the same with people you know, there's friends you've known forever, but their face is the face you know now, not the one they had back when you were both kids. Probably what makes us so adaptable.

This short piece made me think how interesting it might be to find a new project going up - whether large or small - but something built in public. Then, find a contact at the site and interview them. The goal: get to know the project a bit and know some inside details about something that will be around for a long time. At the minimum, it'll make for conversational fodder.

That's true. Without photos, I probably couldn't remember what they looked like.

This reminds me of a strategy I like to deploy when visiting a new place. I like to start a completely new music album, preferably by an artist I'm unfamiliar with.

I'll listen to that album on repeat while I get settled into that new place. In the future whenever I hear a song from that album, I'll feel transported back.

 - love that association of new music to new locale. I am going to steal that and use it for projects I want to work on. Then, when I want to work on the project, I'll start the music first.

That's a sweet lifehack Abe, I'm going to try it out.
