Only Intrinsic Motivation Lasts

Daniel Vassallo left his $500k Amazon job to work for himself, then he wrote the article "Only Intrinsic Motivation Lasts".

That article is one of my favourite on the internet.

The lesson of the article now stares at me daily on this platform. Yes and it's

When we were all on 200WAD, aeons ago, Abe was the undisputed champion of streak breakers. I'm sure
would bear me witness. He was consistent and impressive at breaking his streak. To be fair on him, sometimes he wrote multiple articles per day, but he still never held a long streak nevertheless.

But since Sir Abe built Adagia, man's been writing every day and now holds a record 40-day streak. F O R T Y.

There's nothing intrinsic motivation cannot do.

Cool I'll read this as my Friday evening thrill.

Btw I think it's hilarious that AWS' CEO makes less in salary then this guy did. Yeah I know let's ignore stock options. I just wanted to point that out for lols.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that I did actually have a higher than 40 day streak back at 200WAD lol. It's once 200WAD rebranded and I left the site where I learned to write everyday relentlessly. Just me and RoamResearch. Now I have different tribes on here and different projects so it's easy for me to write everyday. If I don't feel like writing about more 200WAD-esque stuff (business/philosophy/etc) then i can just write a snippet of fiction.

Lol btw what's your intrinsic motivation for the main thing you are doing right now. In fact, what is the main thing you are doing right now?

Dang it man, you're too serious this Friday night... LOOL.

This is a shade, we are keeping it that way and you won't change my mind. 不不不不不不

My intrinsic motivation is time flexibility. I want to have my time in my hands. And that right now means to be a start-up founder. We've discussed this before on telegram

Good I just wanted it out here so that the internet documents it. That way I can laugh at you in ten years when you have a different motivation haha jk.

but speaking of time-in-your-hands motivation it's funny but
is one of the masters of that haha

yeah, brian lives in SF, right? I live in
2021-01-15 21:59:07
Lol wtf! SF rent is like 100 times higher than Lagos. You should be 100 x more free!!
2021-01-15 22:07:44
His richer, mate... 不不不不不不
2021-01-15 22:10:39
lol i love that you speak/write British English. The key to getting rich is speaking and writing American English. Like 50 cent! Homie!

btw have you watched The Wire? Getting into it now. So great.
2021-01-15 22:13:48
alright dawg... lol

American English for FTW. Talking about American English vs Brit. Nigeria was colonised by the brits, but our strongest influence even in political comes from America. I find myself battling with Honor/Honour, Savior/Saviour almost every day. lol

Alright, I'll check out the wire, i hope it isn't slow burn.

If YC funded creatives, you wanna apply?

This is a great article. I completely understand why he left Amazon. I do remember Sir Abe was a member of #Teamstreak at one point, but he did not last very long. I don't think a "streak breaker" needs a champion or even much fanfare. What's so special about it?
2021-01-15 22:38:01
Enjoyed this thread. If you want to own the streak game, make your own site. Speaking of rich, I was watching a couple of guys talk about what it's like being rich ( they are ) and one has piece -- the other doesn't. But, they both get more excited by the creative ways they make $20 than the $100K /month income they have.

Hey Seun, thanks for this article! I follow this guy on Twitter and enjoy his tweets a lot, but never read about his 'origin' story. Feels like we follow the same folks!
2021-01-16 09:27:50
@seun if an intiative as strong as YC but for entertainment existed then yeah I would love to try to be a part of it. I don't think it does though. And I don't think YC would make a good fit for the entertainment domain. They'd get more fixated on building products around that space instead lol.

@brian that's an apt observation. Having a reason to streak. At 200WAD I felt like a guest so i didn't feel the need to streak. But here I feel like I'm the host so I feel like I need to do some extra chores around here. Like washing the dishes, cleaning hte bathroom, keeping a streak. Also it's fun to just be ahead of Brandon because he had mentioned that one day I'd fall off the wagon lol.

But I promise you this. If i ever do break my streak on here in the future it won't be because I fell off the wagon. It'll be because I got sick of being ontop of the leaderboard. A way to prevent this though is to invent more leaderboards than just the streak.
2021-01-16 16:48:04
I maintain that the only reason you are ahead in streak is that somehow the counter started before the streak was implemented.
2021-01-16 16:49:55
the counter started before the streak was implemented? Lol both Jason and I implement a retrospective counter so it's just based on your history. I said this in the Telegram but I should've bolded it lol
2021-01-16 16:53:13
lol how about this. When Arcticloon implements an api i'll honor the posts you wrote on his thing so that you can have your streak be even longer than mine.
2021-01-16 17:48:57
Seems I need to raise the priority implementing my API
2021-01-16 19:49:42
, I enjoy Daniel's Tweets also. I guess our interest kinda intersects :)

if you can make another leaderboard that wouldn't be tied to streaks, it'd be revolutionary (anything that makes a lazy man lazier is
2021-01-16 21:19:45
I can't WAIT to see what would count on this proposed leaderboard.
2021-01-16 23:51:08
Nope, no streak shenanigans allowed. The streak must remain pure. The real question is how long do you plan to keep going?
2021-01-16 23:52:37
Streak for days not written lol. I'll go as long as it feels comfortable. I think eventually i won't like being on top.
2021-01-17 00:09:35
Wow - this post has to get the crown for the number of comments.
