Getting Into Campus

I was at my mom’s office when I first heard. I was accepted at Addis Ababa University. The 6-kilo campus. My first choice. I hadn’t scored very highly at the school leaving exam. 3.2 out of 4. I was expecting to be assigned to a University outside of the capital city. I couldn’t have done that. I am barely able to get around with my limited language skills in the capital. It would be rough if I had to go outside Addis.

Both my mom and I cried with happiness when we heard. I could finally get to study law and become the lawyer I was meant to be. I was excited at the prospect of going to the dormitory and living the campus life as well.

That was the first time I heard about the affirmative action rule in Ethiopia. It was a law in Ethiopia that was set primarily for women. To encourage them to pursue higher education and seats in government posts. At that time there was only one woman who was a minister. The affirmative action was set in place to allow more women - including those with lower grades than the standard that is required to get into the University.

That rule probably got me into the University of my choice. I later found out that the same rule also enabled more women to get their choice of major. You couldn’t just apply to whatever field you wanted if you were to go to the public University where everything was free of charge. Everything was based on how you scored in the exams.

So there I was, a woman who got the preferential treatment. I didn’t feel any guilt.
A little of both Sir Abe.

Haha then it is fiction : )

i don't mean that in a bad way.

Many confuse non-fiction with real and fiction with fake

but it's not like so

with nonfiction your are simply trying to document something historically accureately.

with fiction you're trying to create a world and it might all be fueled by real things but you're not meaning to document.

this is the difference.

also another difference is that
GabrielGreco
writes no fiction but reads a lot of it.

while i write a lot of fiction, albeit bad, but i write it nearly everyday.

but don't worry. Gabriel will one day appear out of hte dark and show me up and prove to me i've been a fool writing fiction all these days for no good reason. he'll prove it to me... one day.

Interesting perspective Sir Abe. Yup I call it fiction too... based on true events :)

I have also started to read a lot more fiction. In addition, I have started looking at how stories are told in movies and tv shows as well. There is a ton of value in fiction. I am writing more frequently too and the more I write, the more I want to write. Feel good.
