a fire out in Oakwood police full time

police
officer Dan Anderson sat in the employee lounge listening to the ceiling fan turn overhead. His break was technically up five minutes ago, but he knew that it wouldn't matter if he sat there for another extra five.

He enjoyed this part of the day. Sitting there, not thinking about anything in particular at all. Things would simply come to him and he'd watch the thoughts. Today he was thinking about his daughter and her upcoming birthday. He was going to get her all the gifts that she wanted and invite her friends over for a party that he would pay for. Now that he was finally working a
full time
job he could pay for it all. A soft smile came over his face.

A pair of sturdy legs belonging to an average height man pounced by. Anderson knew that his break was over. Now he was no longer thinking about his daughter. He was finishing the rest of his coffee, wiping his face to make sure there was no java left on it, and heading out back to his desk.

As he approached his desk, he was surprised to see that detective Jacob Getty and the captain were standing there.

"Anderson, you're going to be assisting Getty today. Drop everything else you're doing. We'll get it assigned to somebody else."

"Okay. I mean yes sir!"

"Hi. Jake."

"Dan."

"Shall we?"

Getty led the way with his sturdy frame and strong legs. Anderson followed along not knowing yet what to expect. Getty led them into a private room down the hall and closed the door.

"So captain tells me you're new to the department?"

"Um. Yeah. Real green."

"Good. Because this is an important case. And you're going to be my partner on it."

Anderson was confused. Why would they want him on the case? Especially if it were important. He had just graduated from the academy few months ago, and since had only been dealing with simple things such as noise complaints. He thought about voicing his concern or confusion to Getty but then stopped his breath and decided not to, choosing instead to open the folder that was passed to him across the table.

He could feel Getty's eyes watching him as he began looking at the first page. And just like Getty was reading his mind he said.

"You're probably wondering why we want you on the case. Seeing as you're fresh."

Anderson nodded.

"Well that's exactly why I need you as my partner. It's the only way we have a chance at cracking this nut. Nobody who's ingrained into the traditional police methodologies will do."

Anderson knew of Getty's reputation. He didn't do things by the books. He was sort of a legend amongst police. And now he was supposed to be helping him. He didn't know what to think. For a moment he thought about his daughter and how she would want the new doll toy. And thinking about this made him feel so distant from her... like he was losing her. But then he realized he needed to focus. On this case. Whatever it was. Okay he told himself. What do we have here?

A fire out in Oakwood.
