I was in a meeting today, and the first twelve minutes of the meeting were wasted on roll call. 12/60 = 20% of the meeting was burned on something that doesn't mean anything. Who cares who is attending the meeting? What about someone who joined after the roll call? It's a Microsoft Teams meeting, so isn't there a way to capture the participants in the meeting if you really need it for some historical record? Poorly-run meetings are a pet peeve of mine. I don't want my time or anyone on my team's time to be wasted.
When I was a permanent employee, I had more latitude to enforce proper meeting etiquette. If I received a meeting request without an agenda, I declined it. After the meetings, I contacted the meeting organizers and asked for the minutes of the meeting. These are basic elements of a meeting. Most people know proper meeting protocols. It's not a problem of ignorance.
As a consultant, I don't have as much latitude. I have to endure poorly-run meetings and wasted time, especially when the executives have asked for the meetings. What I can do is lead by example for my own meetings and hope that more people will get the hint.

and I were talking the other month about how in that case it's almost best for the company to let employees schedule a certain amount of time to socialize on the company's clock. Water cooler zooms.
What's the 20% of the meeting that got 80% of the work done?
No? what about all the people who don't need to be here? are they here yet?
Okay let's wait until they get here. Nevermind let me start talking about what we will talk about in this meeting.
five minutes later
Okay now that everyone's here let me repeat what I just said again.
