Resilience

As a parent of two adult daughters, I am often asked if I have any parenting tips on how to bring up children. I have one tip. Teach your children to be resilient.

Resilience is one's capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It is the ability to cope with unexpected changes and challenges in your life.

Parents have a critical role in developing a child's resilience. Building a happy home is a good start. One that is supportive of them, and makes them feel safe and comfortable when they are not feeling the best. When a difficulty arrives for your child, don't try and solve it for them. Ensure you are there to listen, not judge, and help them develop a more positive perspective of their difficulty.

Most of all, you are there to support them through it. Guide your child to find a solution for themselves. It may take a bit of time, and a lot of tears, but you will need to persist with the unconditional support until they have that lightbulb moment.

Once they have solved that problem, get ready to saddle up to help them with the next issue. A resilient child is never one without difficulty, but they will learn to cope better with what life throws at them.

I have noticed with students I teach, that resilience  is lacking, and because of it its so hard for them, and their work suffers. Any minor problem has a big impact  That has been a big theme I try to teach, but it is hard. Maybe because its outside the home. If you have any tips to increase the culture of resiliency in the work place, I am all ears!

Good point. We usually say this in the immigrant community in the US. Take them back home for a little bit so they can see how hard life can be. Many parents do it for exactly the reason you mention Peter. Many of us that grew up in different parts of the world saw hardships that helped us build the resilience muscle. But the next generation need to consciously work on building resilience.

So key! When reading this initially I thought it was to be taught how to learn so that they can learn anything. But even that is just a symptom of underlying resilience.

I remember in my sociology class learning that the primary factor to a kid from a low SES family in the U.S succeeding was resilience.
