The premise of it is designed for people like me. I am a fan of self improvement, deliberate practice and getting feedback - all of which I was getting from toastmasters club for public speaking skills. This one is about writing. Specifically about writing like your favorite author.
I am having a hard time deciding who I want to invest the 5 week course on. This is the list of my favorite writers.
1. Scott Adams - author of How to fail at everything and still win big. 2. Neil Strauss - author of the Game. 3. Trevor Noah - author of Born a Crime 4. Jackie Collins - author of a bunch of fiction about Hollywood 5. Chimamanda Adiche - author of Americana
There are many other authors whose writing I enjoyed but since their work was a one-off - I am not sure that there is a lot of material for me to study and learn. From the list above - 2 of them mostly write fiction. Something that I need to learn to do more of. The others are very good writers. I have had a chance to hear all of them talk and realize that they are excellent communicators in general. Particularly Trevor is great at making his point with humor and examples that made his book exceptional good for me. I have thought about deliberately adding humor to my writing, maybe this is my opportunity.
Both Adiche and Collins are appealing cause they delve into the personal which is honest and to me needs more writing skills. Exactly why they use fiction as their medium. Scott and Neil are very methodical in how they write. Both have had professional training for writing and use deliberate practice to work on their craft. To me, that is the type of writing that everyone can easily adapt and mimic. The personal styles are more difficult to mimic and at this time, I don't think I want to get into fiction writing just yet.
I hear you Daniel. I have mentioned Scott to a few people and the first reaction I get is about his comments over the last few years. I am still a fan of his writing and his style. I would love to be able to write and use humor as easily as he does.
