But to him this was normal. He had not known anything different. It was only after seeing his counselor that he began wondering... maybe the feelings of having his dead father around him was fucked up. That it was a mental illness.
I can only hope we will succeed one day, as a society to approach 'mental illness' in a subtler way. We've done some progress in the past 80 years or so. Lobotomy.. was a horrible thing. Electroshocks too, and guess what, in France they still doit on rare occasions. It is horrible. Lithium, antidepressants, amphetamines ... I've seen people going very very offtrack in mental institutions. I am sure they could have recovered much faster in a different setup. We fail to understand the complexity of each individual and atypical mental states. We don't understand the intricacies of identity, desire, love or the sense of belonging. Not to talk about purpose. How do you cultivate a healthy sense of purpose in an individual that is lost.
It is a good measure of the advancement of any society to look at how they treat 'mental illness' or addiction bte.
