So much for Google

Everyone is already predicting that Google will be knocked off its longstanding perch as the King of Search now that AI language processing has matured to the point that ChatGPT can tell you almost anything.

Microsoft was the first to throw down the gauntlet by partnering with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into the Bing search and a premium Teams version. I always chuckle anytime I see that I've gained a new subscriber from Bing. Who actually uses Bing?? Maybe Microsoft will have the last laugh.

Google was in a rush to counter with its own AI platform called Bard that it announced on Monday before a big demo yesterday. Google's demo event in Paris went off the rails quite quickly. The VP of Search Liz Reid introduced a live demo and sheepishly announced that she did not have a phone to perform the demo. Steve Jobs would not approve.

Google also created an ad demonstrating the Bard software that flubbed the first question. In the advertisement, Bard is given the prompt: "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can I tell my 9-year old about?" Bard responds with several answers, including one suggesting the JWST was used to take the very first pictures of a planet outside the Earth's solar system or exoplanets. The first pictures of exoplanets were, however, taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in 2004, as confirmed by NASA.

Reuters was the first to report on the error, which caused Google's parent company, Alphabet, to lose about $100B in market value on Wednesday.
