Cal ended up taking a bunch of pills. He was dead by morning. Marianna didn't know how to feel about it. She was unhappy with the relationship. But now that he had killed himself she was filled with guilt. The few people still left in her life consoled her. Told her it was going to be okay. But inside she felt relieved.

A man names Shawn came to the funeral. Flew in from out west. Apparently he was a big shot. Cal's brother. And Cal's mom came too. The two of them seemed unsurprised. Like they had kind of expected such an outcome. That comforted Marianna a bit. Nobody spoke explicitly about that though.

While the organ played a slow tune in the musky air of the

, Marianna kept wondering if Keith would show up. Perhaps he had heard about the news.

Well even if he had. There was slim chance he'd make the trek out. You don't get invited to funerals. You show up if you want.
