Another cup he got now. It was two am. A turning point, the kid told him it was free refills, but insisted on paying, tipping even. Not as much as last time. The kid understood. They talked a little, briefly, about what the kid did when no one was there.
"Is it always this quiet." Derek first said, the kid looked up from his book then around then at him.
"For two am, yeah, it's always this quiet."
"I just thought maybe you'd get a rush, like when the bars close or something."
"Oh, yeah but on a Tuesday? No not really, sometimes Friday, but its just to use the bathroom. Thats why we got the lock." With this he pointed over to the bathroom.
"I usually make people buy something, I don't know, feels fair, like two bucks to pee. I don't lose sleep over it."
"Well I guess you are when your working." Derek said expecting a laugh.
The kid just made a face, like "yeah I guess your right" then he went back to his book.
Derek, smiled politely and went back to his chair.
After a while the kid said, "Dissociation is the only way to get through.".
Derek replied "Ha ha, oh yeah for sure." Then he just kept reading, til 4am and finally 6.
"Thanks."
"No worries."
And the bell dinged behind him.
