My father published his autobiography last month. I am very proud to see him finish that project that was started many years ago. He is an avid reader and always talked about writing a book someday. It was a wonderful journey to see him from planning, writing, editing, more editing, writing anew, editing and eventually publishing the book. Its been over 10 years since he started to write this book.
The best part of my dad's publishing the book, was his engagement and excitement around it. After retirement, there were few things that brought that type of sustained purpose and energy in the day to day. So I loved how my dad would research and take time to gather information and particularly images to include in his book. I am now urging him to write a part 2 or a similarly fulfilling project so he can keep his energy going.
My dad also enjoyed re-living a lot of the great events in his life starting from his earliest memories. My dad has had an interesting life and he went all over the world for his work. He included all his adventures and lessons in the memoir. He told me that sometimes just thinking about the great things from his past, made him feel young again.
One of the best things for me as a daughter is also getting to know more details about my dad's childhood, my grand parents, the people who influenced and helped my dad and learning about the things that moved my father.
I am a big fan of people writing their memoirs. Particularly our old people. There is a lot of wisdom and lessons that die when a person passes away without sharing it. How I wish my grandfather either wrote a book or I had a chance to interview him. These things are precious - especially for the future generations.

How's your dad publishing the book?
Also, nice to see you again, Keni!
Dad published the book in Ethiopia . There are plans to translate and publish here as well in the future.
Translating is just as much writing.
