cold sandwiches and big lots peanut butter Big Lots

as reply to And Jelly

He got ingredients from a store nobody knew about anymore.
Big Lots
. Nobody back home knew what that store even sold. "Isn't that place out of business yet?" his mom would ask.

It was the only store he could walk to, and not expect Danny to be there. Danny didn't cook a lot, so he constantly was at the local grocery store, almost everyday, sometimes twice a day. People knew him by name. He was probably asking the employees whether they'd seen The Kid. Probably made it sound like he was looking out for The Kid. The employees would help Danny. They loved him. Everybody in this damn city did.

The only place The Kid could walk to and get food safely was a Big Lots in a run down strip mall where the grass was growing through the parking lot.

His last haul had consisted of graham crackers that were almost at the expiration date, two jars of peanut butter, one jar of jelly, and a loaf of aunt millie bread. He wished he could buy more bread, but that was the only loaf left.

The store was a peculiar place. He wasn't sure why it was even in business. The only people who shopped there seemed to be a mix of extremely poor people who had no choice and retired people with too much time on their hands.

He had bought the binoculours there too. The place had a strange variety of merchandise. While eating the graham crackers after the
peanut butter
and jelly sandwichees, the Kid was reminded of his childhood lunches. Cold sandwiches in a lunch pail packed by his mom.
