He was bummed that she took out her phone. If it had been another friend he wouldn't have cared. Everybody was constantly on and off their phones these days. But McKayla was different. When she was hanging out, she always gave you her full attention. So when she took out her phone and he saw her on bouncing on all these social media platforms mindlessly it felt like a slap in the face.

He thought about taking his phone out too, but he resisted. His hand had gotten as far as the pocket of his jeans. But he said no. I'll be present. And maybe she'll put her phone away too. However she didn't. she just kept burrowing deeper and deeper into the screen. This was weird. Because from what he could see, she was looking at the same few screens over and over again. Nothing new was incoming. What was she doing. Her body language was off. She was all scrunched up into her self like she was trying to disappear. Making her self look smaller. It reminded him of how he would act back in high school when he'd have a bad breakout on his face and he didn't want people to look at his acne. Like if he were to scrunch himself up smaller that his face would be invisible.
