So our class of 6 weeks is over.
My echo was Scott Adams. My main goal was to write well and be funny.
I now realize that being funny is hard.
A friend suggested that I should expose myself to comedy more than I currently am. I usually read/watch drama and real life stories. There are a lot of books, movies, stand up and online blogs that have good comedic material. Constant exposure to that will help me improve my sense of humor. Since it doesn't come naturally to me, getting more exposure will help my creativity. I have watched a couple of stand-ups already.
Another idea was to practice writing funny. Just like writing gets easier that more we do it, maybe being funny will also be more natural if I do it more often. I personally don't like when anyone is working too hard to be funny all the time. It shouldn't feel forced. But I understand that it is a muscle just like writing and I may not have worked that muscle a lot throughout my life.
I know the type of humor that I like. Satire, sarcasm - George Carlin style. I have already seen everything by Carlin on YouTube. I found out that he has a couple of books too. So that will be what I will look into next.

i think as a beginner you are better off trying the latter. Just write things that make you laugh while writing brainstorming them and writing them and don't even worry about whether anyone else will find it funny.
You should check out the article that I link in this post
it's an interview with one of the funniest writer's I've encountered and this is coming from somebody who's not a fan of humor/comedy writing.
I read the piece and even looked at the books and jokes by John. I am not a fan of the Simpsons or shows like that. I rarely find them funny. I think I have a different sense of humor. George Carlin is the type of comedy I like. And maybe Jon Stewart.
