Shopify Q2 Earnings Report

Shopify just Released their earnings call for Q2.

Let me tell you why Shopify reports are so important all through this year. The year 2020 was the year of the pandemic, quarantine and work from home. This made e-commerce experience such boom that Shopify president Harley Finkelstein described it as “ten years of growth compressed into one”

So many think, post pandemic, the numbers should reduce

Some of the numbers for Q2 2021 include;

- $1.12 billion revenue (up 57% vs Q1 2020)
- $785.2 million merchant services (up 52% vs Q1 2020)
- $334.2 million subscriptions (up 70% vs Q1 2020)
- As at June 30, 2021, Shopify had $7.76 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities, compared with $6.39 billion at December 31, 2020.

The numbers shows E-Commerce is not slowing down even as the world is easing out of the pandemic. The pandemic have altered consumer behaviour forever.

Skeptics think things will soon go back to pre-pandemic levels. Personally, I disagree. Here are my personal reasons
1. There's always been prediction about how e-com will take over the world, and this pandemic wave seems to be right momentum it needed. Also Shopify is personally ensuring this momentum does not die by lending massively to Small Businesses. In Q2 Shopify released $363M in capital to SMB’s, up 137% vs Q2 2020.
2. College athletes in US got a policy in their favour recently that enables them to receive payments and endorsements in their name/image. This is massive as it opens up the largest the cluster of athletes in the US to become independent brands.
3. Shopify just entered the NFTs game. They are making selling NFTs far easier than anyone in the market. This will massively increase Shopify adoption which will ultimately rub off on e-com.

1. Harley Finkelstein--Great name. 2. I think the jury is still out on NFTs. I want to see what happens when the hype dies down.
