A writing tip Medium the future discover

Write something without intending to finish it.

Don't act on the compulsion to finish and share it with someone. Just write something down, low stakes, like a secret nobody will read--

actually scratch that.

write it like someone will read it. But this someone is a special person. If you were to take out your phone or go through your email list you wouldn't be able to find them.

If you haven't guessed by now this person is you in
the future
.

You'll like returning to things you wrote later on. If you've left yourselves some breadcrumbs in the past then you'll know what I mean. So long as it was written honestly then no matter how 'bad' it is it'll make you smile to be reintroduced.

What holds most back from this is not actually writing it in the first place. Expecting to open up an empty document or a blank
Medium
page only when they are going to pound something out and hit publish/share. They're not willing to just write so that they can
discover
. So that they can return to something that is meaningful to them, but maybe they hadn't figured it out yet.

For me writing into a physical notebook has helped me appreciate the value of just writing things down without expecting it to be read by anybody other than the future me.
