Sullivan

Sullivan was part of the founding team. Or actually part of the team that was contracted to build the product. The pay wasn't bad and he was learning a lot of cool things. Everybody told him that he should be working on his own product, but he liked working on someone else's thing.

Sometimes people ask him now if he's upset that he didn't get any of the millions that the company was now worth. He couldn't be upset about that though. Because the years that he worked on it while collecting a paycheck, he never knew it was going to work out then. If you had offered him equity in exchange for a pay cut he probably wouldn't have taken it.

Plus after that he got to work any job he wanted. Sometimes he'd ask the people asking him if he was upset what they were up to. Usually they were always trying to get their own startup off their ground. Their stories seem to be filled with struggle. Sullivan didn't think he was built for struggle.
The story of Sullivan is weirdly generic. Without Sullivan there would be no unicorn companies. While high performance people are praised admired and put on a pedestal we give little to no attention to the army of Sullivan(s) who carry the load, debug, inspect and review.
