His steps woke Marianna up. She had been falling back into a slumber. In the night she woke up about four times. Apparently everyone did. They just woke up for short enough, that they didn't remember it. People slept in cycles.

She was about to fall right back asleep but then she heard the door slide. And then the steps. It was Keith. He often spent much of the night some other place in the station. There had been a few weeks when he hung out in their shared common area. But Marianna didn't like his presence there as she slept and asked him to go someplace else.

He asked, "do you see the light coming into your room?"

"No."

"What about the sound?"

"I don't mind the sound. It's just. I don't like having people hanging out right outside my door. That's all."

"Okay no problem. I'll not hang out there after bed time."

"Thank you."

Now that she heard his steps and the door slide open and shut, she kind of missed having him hang around outside in the common area. Who knew what he did? He wasn't into audio books. He didn't read, she thought. Maybe he just looked at random things on his phone. Marianna didn't do that. She thought it was a waste of time. She thought about Keith staring at his phone. And felt bad.
