Denver and his gal fed them well the two days. The grocery bags they had come in with the morning Marc showed BAKA how to cook those cheezy eggs were now empty of food, filled with compost.
BAKA slept well each nights. Never had issues falling asleep. This was new for him. Usually he couldn't sleep that much. He used to think it was an asset. The dreams were vivid. He woke up rested.
When the phone call came the third morning he was alone outside. He had been staring at where the tree had been. It was gone now. And so was his serenity.
"Yeah?"
"You took a detour."
"Yes. Car trouble innit?"
"Fixed?"
Baka thought for a bit. "Yes. Leaving now."
"Good." And the phone hung up.
BAKA didn't dare go back inside. HE had to leave now. Otherwise he might get stuck here again. Then it'd only be a matter of time before they sent a hit squad here.
The tires made that sound against the gravel. He enjoyed this sound through the open windows. He imagined Marc waking up and running out towards him as he drove away. BAKA never looked into the mirror to check if someone was running after him as he left the house.
