The dealer looked older. Howard wondered if Mike's frat had paid a professional dealer to come in. That seemed absurd. Would a frat really pay a real dealer for a rinky dink card game in the middle of a frat party. This party wsn't even a real party. Just one for the kids who hadn't left for turkey day yet. It wasn't as packed but for a first timer they'd think the party was still hopping.
Without saying a word the dealer looked at Howard. Then shortly switched his glance over to Spencer as though Spencer was the decision maker for both of them.
"Deal us in, Bobby." Spencer sat down without looking at Howard. Right next to Spencer was an empty chair. Howard figured that was his spot.
When he sat down Chew looked at him without smiling or frowning. From the chair, under the lighting Howard noticed how much sweat glistened off Chew's face. It was so much sweat that no regular person would not wipe it off. But Chew just kept it there.
Bobby stated some rules. Numbers about big and small blinds. Mentioned etiquette about time per player and what not. Then he began dealing out the cards.
"It's go time." Howard imagined Spencer saying. But in fact he had just imagined it. Spencer's lips were sealed. Howard made sure not to look over too long. Didn't want to look like he was cheating. Or worse... to look like he was eyeing down Spencer. Not the kind of thing you do at a card table full of men.
