A lot of his friends now had an Amazon Ring. Or some other type of home security system. He really ought to have one of those. It was the 21st century after all. Why wouldn't you have one of those? During Christmas he had watched the first 

Home Alone

movie, where the burglars went around pretending to be cops asking the rich people what type of home security systems they had. Back then it was normal to just have time activated lights to make it look like you were home. That was really rich people with big houses. Nowadays you could be a lower middle class single person and still have a doorbell camera. Suveillance.

But he didn't have that. So when he came back home he had this paranoid thought that someone had been here while he was gone. He kept telling himself that this was a crazy idea. Kept repeating it to himself "this is crazy" but he didn't believe those words. so he kept saying it. He wished he could believe it but he couldn't. That night he was scared to fall asleep .He thought he would struggle to fall asleep but he ended up still being able to. He must've been dead tired.
