Back Again

as reply to Buying a college sweatshirt

She usually got up late. So he could sneak out early and be back by 10:30. She wouldn’t be up until at least 11:30 so this would give him time.

It was stupid to not go at the time he saw her yesterday. He remembers she used to talk to Keith. He remembered they were always together.

He couldn’t sleep. But something said seven was too early. So he didn’t get up until 8:30. At 8:30 he moved out of view of the iPad. He turned on his computer to just play some background music. Maybe she’d assume he was asleep.

He put the new sweatshirt and looked at himself in the mirror. He liked belonging even if he didn’t technically. Out in the square he felt that people didn’t care. Some of the students walking to class gave him nods or small smiles.

At the Starbucks too, a girl held open the door for him and smiled. But at the counter she wasn’t there. He looked around the store. She wasn’t there.

He ordered a drink smaller this time cheaper. Just a an espresso double over ice.

He took a sip and grimaced. He had to come back again.
