As a society we use popular stories to prepare ourselves for big journeys. I think because we sexualize women too much and also tabooify menstruation that we put a lot of girls through a lot of unnecessary pain. I imagine that it's rare that a girl feels super supported when going through their first few periods.

Sometimes they might just tell people they are sick. They don't want to explain exactly what's going on. A lot of the people around her might not understand. It's not worth grossing them out.

I know growing up I never had a clue what a period was. And yes when I first heard of it I thought it was gross. Today I thought of how it would be better if we as families and communities talked more about stuff like periods. We treat kids like they can't handle things but I think they can. It's more about our insecurities as adults. We want to keep everything dinner table kosher.

But screw that. Going forward I hope there are more children's stories that actually delve into the real type of shit that can get people prepared. Like a movie as popular as
Frozen
that openly has periods as part of the plot.
This post was worth it just for the phrase "tabooify menstruation."

It is actually so much better in the US than in other societies. I have heard of horror stories when girls themselves never understood what was happening to them and thought they were possessed by the devil.

Meanwhile in parts of India, the parents throw a party to invite other people and share the fact that their daughters are now open for the business of marriage and kids.
