Once Brandon asked me something along the lines of "where has the magic of 200 words a day gone?"
I didn't have a good answer for either Brandon or myself at the time, and I confess I still don't have a good answer for him today, but now I've got one for myself.
A consistent writing habit one of the toughest things to maintain. It seems like it's almost impossible to do it unless you do it everyday. Unlike something like
tennis
or
weightlifting
writing seems to be something that you can't just do two to four times a week. For most people it's an everyday thing or a GTFO thing.
So where has the magic of
200WAD
gone? I see it everywhere. Maybe someone like therealbrandonwilson or peterdannock writing everyday doesn't feel magical since they've already proven themselves. But people like williamliao writing everyday for nearly half a year now. seun writing for over three weeks straight after such a long hiatus, and also coming back with more style and substance at that. keni crawling back from out of her previous health troubles to now cement a daily habit that's 76 days strong. And all the rest of the old
200WAD
writers who still write daily either on
Lifelog
or
Writestreak
. That's magical to me.
Who knows? Maybe GabrielGreco's most recent return will be a more permanent one. And he and I will write some very bad, but completed, fiction.
You know, the thing that's less magic (though it is in fact more magical now) is that we sort of all know each other here, it's like a club. 200WAD was like that, but also because it was busier, you never knew who'd come along. To me at least, the comings and goings of regulars, the new arrivals, the weekly topics, made it seem more like an open network than the semi-writing club here. I'm not saying that this should be like 200WAD at all, but I do think they're different and, like you said, it's another type of magic.
As for betting on any kind of streak for me, hope you got money to burn.
Prepare to be knocked over with a feather with this proclamation: I don't think the magic has anything to do with a streak; it has everything to do with the community.

I say consistent habit rather than streak because not everyone actually streaks.
