Kevin Feige

Kevin Feige.

Kevin is the primary creator and producer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He produced the highest-grossing movie of all time Avengers: Endgame. He's brought staggering success to Marvel.

What amazes me about Kevin is how the success he's achieved with Marvel have made DC Comics look like an amateur. In my opinion, DC Comics have the better comic heroes in Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash etc. But Kevin was able to create a shared universe for Marvel Characters, he patiently built the cinematic universe through Phase One to Phase Three and right now almost anything that comes out of Marvel turns to gold. Including mediocre TV shows.

I feel Kevin Feige is massively underrated. He isn't even 50 yet.  He needs to write a book. Of course, he isn't single-handedly responsible for all the successes, just like Mark Zuckerberg isn't single-handedly responsible for Facebook's successes. But Kevin envisioned it, and he made it happen. that's remarkable.
I am so not a comics person. I was forced to see a lot of the comic superhero movies. But I have to admit, the endgames was GOOD! No idea who Kevin is but I have a new found respect for the creative process. Especially the ability to tell a story, captivate the audience and include deep psychological thoughts all in one - is a marvelous skill I wish to learn.

These product thinking posts of yours are great Seun! Keep going.

I agree with Keni that these product-thinking/analyses are great. They're getting closer and closer to the point where 'this can only come from seun'. Keep it up! Keep figuring out what only you can come up with. Glad to be on this journey with you as I try to do the same for myself.

I don't know, Seon, how is he underrated? Clearly he's highly rated as a product guy (since, as you said it, the MCU is a product) with a keen eye for his market and how to extract the maximum profit out of it, but as a storyteller?
I've yet to get a whiff of originality in anything Marvel -- or DC -- have ever done. Their business model is the epitome of formulaic, and they're simply tapping a market full of people who are happy to stuff their faces with popcorn while watching the very same stories over and over and over again.
If he wrote a book on how to pull that off it might be interesting. But if he wrote a story, I would expect it to be unoriginal drivel just like every Marvel movie ever made.

haha, Kevin's kid must not see your comment.

That said, I think you are misjudging comic superhero movies. Such movies are already established as comic books, they are drawn from comics as old as 1960. So they have to be true to the source material (comics) which leaves room for little or no originality. The biggest work of a superhero movie is fan service, make what the nerds read in the comic book come alive. At that level, originality is not a priority but rather careful adaptation. I'd give you an example, Black Widow is hitting the cinemas July 9th, but early reviews are in, some of which says the movie is shit - primarily because the villain, TaskMaster wasn't well portrayed.

I know you're judging as an artist, but I'd argue that's the wrong yardstick in this instance.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware of the lore, etc, it just happens that it, too, is unoriginal. The only superhero type story/show I've ever enjoyed is Amazon's The Boys. It really gets to the heart of the superhero craze in an irreverent manner.
