Apparently the frat wasn't doing well. They were fine financially. Past endowments were plenty to float them. But they couldn't get the same number of boys excited about rushing. Much of the house remained empty. So they rented out to men, and only men, via

"Why though?" Dave asked.
"I don't know. To tell you the truth I think a lot of the brothers were just scared. It's a big house, and it can be scary in the fall when nobody's around. I mean it's nice when it's empty because everyone's away for break. But it can get creepy when you spend week after week, during the school year in a big empty house."
"I see," Dave said while tilting his head up and looking around to signal like he was observing the vast void.
"So were you, or your brothers... scared of ghosts?"
Lenny gave a look. Lenny was the shy,
anxious
type. Wiry body. Jittery body language. The only brother who didn't give Dave the stink eye when he went to say hi.
"We don't like to use that word here."
Ghosts? Dave thought without saying. Instead he just nodded.
