She didn't take the ring off because she was interested in Calvin. She took it off because she was embarrassed to say she was looking for a man named Keith. And of course Calvin would ask, is that your husband?
She would feel stupid saying no. I am married though. To someone else.
Calvin wasn't the type to pry. He'd let you have your secret. Or at least let your secret go unsaid. He'd still know. This was the kind of relationship they always had. A part of why they got along back in the day. But also a reason why they stopped talking along the way.
They met at a diner out by . That's where Calvin worked and lived.
"Well a little outside of Westcity. Too expensive to live in the city you know?"
"It's pretty cool. That you're a cop."
"Is it?"
"You get to solve crimes and mysteries right?"
He laughed. "I'm not a detective. Plus it's not like that. I mostly do pedestrian things. Very boring job actually."
He took a sip of coffee. There was still steam coming out from the mug. The waittress had just done a top off. She had drunk only half her cup. He was up to three now. He must drink a lot of it on the job she thought.
"What about you though? Running a cafe. That seems really cool. But I'm guesssing youre going to tell me the same thing. That that's what everyone thinks. And actually it's boring."
"You got it," she smiled.
He smiled back before taking another sip.
"I can help you with this. But I just want to let you know. I think he'll show up in a few days or so. Just how these things pan out most times."
"I hope so, Calvin."
