Shane held the receiver to his ear for a minute after the line went blank on the other side.
What in the world was that? he wondered.
He put the receiver down. Leaned back into the squeaky, worn, synthetic leather office chair to give his belly breathing room.
Leaning back he could stare over his cubicle wall and out onto the windows near the ceiling and see some blue. No matter how enclosed and plastic the call center was, this window gave him some solace. Some connection to the greater world. Staring out through it kept him sane during these eight hour shifts. He would think about things while staring. Like right now he thought again...what in the world?
Shane had threatened the customer with cutting off the connection. But really Verizon was nice about cutting your connection off. They would let you slide for a few months without paying. The strange thing with this customer though was that he sort of seemed to want the connection to be cut off right then. Some significance with the number six. Six weeks.
If he were to do right by the customer then he should cut off their connection now, right?
He had to think about this. Most people didn't want their connection cut off. Shane straightened out and looked at the monitor. Hovered the mouse cursor over the button "terminate connection".
"Yo Shane! Going to lunch?"
Shane leaned back again. It was Mike. The recent college grad who had joined their floor and had turned it into quite the social environment. Had even made work a bit 'fun'.
"Yeah sure. Coming now." Shane said. He could decide after lunch whether to terminate the connection for the customer or give the usual grace period.

Before heading to the chinese restuarant Dave pulled up 'know yourself' by on . He snickered. Verizon hadn't cut his connection yet. He would get to listen to this song for free.
He was so glad the sign had come through. He had been preparing for . And now that it was here. He no longer felt aimless and anxious. Now he was wired, on a mission. He couldn't wait to see again.
