So I guess I'm writing just as much today as any other day? Why? Because even if it's my girlfriend's birthday, there are moments when I actually do get some free time. And I haven't reached a stage where I need 3-4 hours to write in a day.
That's what I love so much about . The maximum daily input tapes off around 3-4 hours on a given day. And this is a level for experts... the GOATs of writing. So for someone like me, I don't even need to worry about snatching three hours a day to get my writing in. Even just having 30 minutes is good, just being totally honest here.
Yes. I think that this is something that's hard to be honest with. I don't think many people who are at our level of writing will admit this. But I only really require -- as in I max out at -- 30 minutes of writing on any given day. After that, I might as well go do something else. Daydream. Read. Watch a rerun of a match. Literally anything else.
But yeah there was a time when I would lie to people and proudly say I was writing like two hours a day finally. But now that I've finally reached this pinnacle of 30 minutes a day daily writing I can laugh at that old lie and tell you the truth. The truth is that becoming a person who can write 30 minutes a day without spending >80% of my decision making energy getting myself to do it has been a long journey. And if you asked me years ago how I would feel about the prospect of me being a 30 minute a day writer by this phase of my life I would've laughed and said, no way. I'll be writing all day by then!
It's funny how that goes, but this is what I love about writing. No matter how busy someone is, I think that they're able to steal 30 minutes each day to do the writing. Whether it's a consultant juggling four calendars or a pretty successful CTO or a Nigerian employeepreneur, we're all working with a short window of how much we can show up.
The key is to just make sure you get no choice on whether you show up. Long time ago you decided not to give yourself a choice about brushing your teeth. Do that with writing. If you want to write that is.
