high school rules Imogen Howe Death Cab for Cutie Westcity

Imogen Howe
listened to
Death Cab for Cutie
while driving up highway 47.

It was an older album. Reminded her of high school.

During the day it felt more like she was in the middle of nowhere. But in the dark she could imagine and reminisce. She'd feel like she was in a different place.

In about four minutes she would take the exit for highway 6. They had built this just as she got her license. Growing up as a kid it would take over an hour to get to
Westcity
. After highway  you could get there in under 40 minutes. It was short enough to visit regularly.

Death Cab reminded her of Alan. She wondered why they hadn't hung out in high school. They would've gotten along actually had they not allowed social status to get in the way. That was the one thing she liked about this year. It seemed like the cliques and rules of the past finally no longer mattered. The most popular kid in high school was less cool than a nerd who had just moved out west with a job offer to a startup.

She liked Alan. There was no secret there. She hadn't told him outright. But she didn't need to do that did she? She was texting him everyday. She would even text him when he wasn't texting her. That wasn't something girls did unless they liked the guy.

Alan must know, she thought. But she couldn't know for sure. This uncertainty thrilled her. She knew it was stupid but she liked him a lot even though she didn't know him well.

A new song came on. The exit for highway 6 approached. She would arrive at the address Jack sent in about 20 minutes. It was some bar.
