I have been watching a bunch of Indian and Pakistani movies lately. Ever since the White Tiger, Netflix has been recommending a bunch of movies from the two countries. And I have been enjoying it more than I expected.
I have seen a few love stories as well. I typically avoid that genera since I am not a fan of the damsel in distress models. But for some reason, I find myself liking the romantic movies in another language.
I was trying to see what seems to be the selling point for romance in those movies. And there seems to be one major thing. If a person makes time to listen to their partner, that is the biggest gift. Listening seems to be the universal language of love and respect. From one love story to the next, that is the theme.
The more I think about it, listening is key for any relationship. But I find that I need to work on my listening skills. As I get older, it is hard to listen without interrupting the person speaking. It is hard to remember the points and the train of thought. So often, instead of actively listening, I am multi-tasking and do an awful job of listening and communicating.
Like most things, it seems like everything gets harder as we age. Knowing that listening is important adds to the frustration of not doing it.

I am going to start carrying around a notebook to take notes during conversations like they do in debate competitions - if I continue to not listen like I should.
But I don't think that's what's happening with listening. I actually think kids are terrible listeners! They're basically just blabbering no filter! Generalizing here.
It's natural for me to get off by saying something witty. I love it when I say something smart or original and that makes the other person tell me i just did that. I'm weaning off this lately but it took years for me to even admit that I was addicted to it. Then years to realize better ways of communicating.
